Help with pH levels?

How does adding acid to water and a universal indicator change the colour and the pH?

Is the change in pH more extreme in that of water than it would be with water and a buffer?

Help with pH levels?
An acid is a Substance which liberates H+ ions. Indicators are weak acid or bases in a state of equilibrium with the indicator and the its conjugate base or acid. Ex HIn %26lt;-%26gt; H+ In (In means indicator) Now if an acid is added then the equilibrium shifts to the left increasing the amount of HIn which changed colour therefore different concentrations of indicators have different colours.

When an acid is added to water H+ ions dissociate and therefore the indicator changes colour due to the equilibrium mentioned before.

A buffer is one which keeps a constant pH so in a buffer the change in pH is very slow while in water it is sharp.

Hope i answers your question well :)
