Sketch a pH curve for the reaction of sulfuric acid with a sodium hydroxide solution. All reaction steps are known to be quantitative.
But without knowing the amounts and concentrations of the substances, how do I determine the original pH, and the change in pH?PH curves?
The curves are S-shaped.
The pH starts low (it's only a ';sketch'; so the absolute value doesn't matter), say at pH = 1.
The pH only changes very slightly until it approaches the end-point (let's say at 20 cm3).
It then rises very rapidly and levels off at a high pH, say pH = 13.
As both acid and base are strong the curve will be symmetrical about pH = 7.
Check 'Titration Curves' on Google ... there are plenty of examples.
